There's a time and place for everything...

This is the perfect time of year to manage ponds, at Woorgreens nature reserve we've been doing just that. Here Kevin Caster, Forest of Dean Area Reserves Manager explains.

There's a time and place for everything and late autumn-winter and a 13 tonne excavator is a combination that will ensure we keep on top of our ponds at Woorgreens nature reserve.

Although its cold, its a great time to work your own pond as all the pond life has bred and fed and is just settling down to see winter through.

Only ever work less than 50% of your pond and dump any silt and excess plants on the bank side so the critters can slither back into the murky depths.

It sounds too good to be true but our digger driver climbs out his cab and carries every single frog to safe ground. With over 20 saved in one day!

All the pond work that is needed is done this year, so they can now hop back into the restored depths. We shouldn't need to re-work these ponds for decades.
