The once common eel, a staple of Severn life, is in serious decline not just locally but across Europe. Saving this important iconic species requires ‘big picture’ thinking. Tomorrow, local charity, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust is travelling to Normandy to help push this thinking forward.

BadgerBCG is licensed as a veterinary product that may be used by trained and licensed lay vaccinators. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has just finished the second year of its five year badger vaccination programme.

Following a meeting of interested organisations and individuals initiated by members of the farming industry a Declaration has been put before Owen Patterson the DEFRA Secretary of State. A copy of the letter which I signed on behalf of the Trust has been sent to the press.

The Trust does not support the culling of badgers as a component of the bovine TB eradication programme for England, we do actively support the deployment of badger bTB vaccine (BadgerBCG).

I have had the great pleasure of working for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust since 1979; one third of the life of The Wildlife Trusts – currently celebrating its centenary. I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with really great colleagues and supporters; loyal, devoted to nature and extremely knowledgeable. My decision to leave has not been an easy one.

Each year the chief executives and directors of the 47 Wildlife Trusts meet to discuss strategy, operations and environmental issues. In 2012 the conference was held in Alderney.
