Peter Madden, OBE, appointed Chair of Building with Nature

Friday 22nd June 2018

Peter Madden, OBE, has been appointed as the first Chair of ‘Building with Nature’, a company providing a new benchmark for the design and maintenance of green infrastructure.

Building with Nature sets a new standard for high-quality green infrastructure. Through the provision of standards, and an assessment and accreditation service, the benchmark supports the delivery of housing and commercial development. The benchmark defines what high-quality green infrastructure looks like at each stage of the planning and development process, from design through to implementation and long-term management and maintenance.

Peter Madden, OBE, brings 30 years experience of experience in sustainability, the built environment and in scaling up new initiatives. Previously he was CEO of Future Cities Catapult - a centre of expertise on urban innovation, CEO of Forum for the Future - a sustainability non-profit, Head of Policy at the Environment Agency, Ministerial Advisor at Defra and Director of Green Alliance, an environmental think tank. Currently he is Director of Ecovivid and sits on the Board of the Crown Estate.

Commenting on his appointment, Peter Madden said: “I’m passionate about creating great spaces for people and nature. Developers, local authorities and professionals can all benefit from a comprehensive and independent framework for green infrastructure. I’m really looking forward to helping grow the scale and impact of Building with Nature”.

Gemma Jerome, Building with Nature Manager said: “Peter is going to be really helpful as we scale-up the ambition and impact of Building with Nature. We want to support developers and planners to deliver high quality homes and communities, which enrich people’s lives and continue to provide a home for nature. We’re really excited to be working with someone who can accelerate our trajectory to being the ‘go-to’ standard for high quality green infrastructure.”

Roger Mortlock, CEO of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, who developed Building with Nature with the University of the West of England, said: “We’re delighted to have recruited Peter to lead the development of Building with Nature. He understands what we are trying to do and understands the world of developers, but crucially he shares our values and has a career rooted in protecting the environment. He has extensive experience growing the impact of similar initiatives and we are looking forward to working with him.”
