Mission Wild
Over the last 50 years, Gloucestershire’s woodlands, rivers, and grasslands have declined at an alarming rate, taking with it wildlife and our sense of connection to the natural world. A connection our survival depends on.
But this story is not over. We have shown that when we give nature a chance, it responds. From the return of the pine marten to the world-leading recovery of the large blue butterfly, we are already helping to revive the wild. From transforming how water moves through the Stroud Valley to reconnecting a vital 60-mile woodland corridor from the River Wye to the Wyre forest, we know nature can recover. Now we are on a mission to give Gloucestershire’s nature the chance it needs.
But time is running out. The message from experts from around the world is clear - nature needs us to act now, to act together, and to work at scale. To truly thrive, wildlife needs landscapes that are nature-friendly, connected, and resilient. So, we must think bigger and bolder, before the chance for change slips away.
That’s why we have launched the biggest fundraising appeal in our history – to raise an ambitious £3 million in three years to accelerate nature’s recovery through three critical areas...
TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPES
CONNECTING PEOPLE WITH NATURE
BRINGING NATURE BACK
NATURE RECOVERY ZONES (NRZs)
The vision of Mission Wild to enable the change that’s needed is built on our eleven Nature Recovery Zones (NRZs), the answer to creating bigger, better, more and connected landscapes. Where evidence shows that recovery is not only possible, but transformational - for wildlife, people, and climate resilience.
With our expertise and an army of volunteers, working across our eleven NRZs side by side with neighbouring landowners and farmers, we will extend our impact beyond the boundaries of our nature reserves.
These special areas can weave wildlife corridors through the places we live, farm, rest and work, going beyond our reserves allowing nature to thrive and expand across the county. Growing a nature-rich county for everyone, but we cannot do it alone.
