Monthly Updates from the Natural Estates

Welcome back to our (now monthly) blog from the Natural Estates team. Since we last posted the team has been very busy, increasing our number of sessions per week from 7 to 9, with a range of activities taking place at each location. All groups have been busy potting on seedlings that were sown before the Easter break and soon we should be able to plant them into beds, pots and planters.

As well as this, our sunflower growing competition is well under way, with all groups having been given their packs and instructions for growing their 'Russian Giant' sunflowers from seed. The tallest sunflower wins and the results will be announced on Friday 15th September, so stay tuned to see the winner!

Our participants at Lynworth Court have been busy finishing another raised bed planter, as well as beginning a raised vegetable plot that will be accessible to all residents. Similarly, our new group from Bettridge School who are carrying out work at Wallace House, also owned by Cheltenham Borough Homes, are set to be busy growing vegetables over the coming weeks.

Soon we should see the first seedlings appear from our Grow Wild seed packs sown at the Redwell Centre underneath the new dead hedge. The species sown were from the urban woodland seed pack, including betony, selfheal, ragged robin and red campion, amongst others. These will thrive in the slightly shaded conditions under the hedge.

Next we plan to sow all remaining seed packets across the other locations we work in, which will provide improtant food sources for bees and other pollinators, as well as adding a bit of colour to the sites during the summer months.

Keep checking this space for the next updates. Until then, thanks from the Natural Estates Team - Jo, Duncan and Ben.
