Door 22: Cinnamon scented pomander

Christmas Oranges

Make a Christmas Pomander by poking cloves into an orange. Tie a red ribbon round the orange, and use a cinnamon stick as a little handle.

The Christmas scents of orange or tangerine, and warm spices like cinnamon and cloves, can be used in all sorts of Christmassy recipes. Mulled apple juice, or cider is delicious. For the mulled apple juice, simply warm it through with some cinnamon and nutmeg, a couple of strips of tangerine peel, and a little bit of sugar if it’s sharp, and you have a delicious warming brew.

But you can use those same scents to make baskets of pot pourri or a hanging pomander too.

For a pot pourri, slice some oranges or tangerines very thin, and apples too, if you like. Dry them out in an oven at a low temperature. You want them to dry, not cook.

When they’re dry, mix them in a jar with your favourite spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise. Leave them sealed for a day or two, and when you undo the lid, the scent will be released.
