Greystones Farm nature reserve is a unique site, with a long history of human settlement that has produced a wealth of nationally important heritage features. These include a working organic farm, Scheduled Ancient Monument comprising a major Neolithic causewayed enclosure and iron age multivallate hill fort, a SSSI hay meadow, a river rich in wildlife and a restoration meadow, all set within a sweeping Cotswold landscape.

where people can learn about the rich wildlife and history of the Cotswolds

This presents a unique opportunity to tell the story of 6,000 years of continuous human occupation and farming. We will reconnect the community with this impressive site, interpret its history and demonstrate the impacts of human activity on the natural world.

Whist Greystones is already an enjoyable place to visit, many of the traditional farm buildings are derelict and there is scant information about the important heritage around the Farm. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has always aspired to restore the farm and transform it into a location where people can learn about the rich wildlife and history of the Cotswolds.

This is particularly important as the closure of Local Authority outdoor education centres means there are few opportunities to learn outdoors, which is reflected in the continuing decline in children’s connection with nature and levels of outdoor play.

Thanks to £78,000 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund we are now working with the community to develop plans to transform Greystones Farm into a heritage education and discovery centre. Successfully completing this stage will unlock a further £800,000 of HLF funding to make these plans a reality.

The Cradles of the Cotswolds project will offer a huge range of exciting activities for people to learn about the heritage of the Cotswolds and get involved in restoring and maintaining it. It will cater for all ages and abilities and will be accessible for people with mobility issues.

Have your say and help us to unlock funding!

We want this project to create a truly special place for the Cotswolds, but we need your help to develop our plans. Whatever your age or interests we need to know what you think we should create at Greystones by completing our online consultation. It will take a maximum of five minutes to complete and we need at least 2000 responses to unlock the next stage of funding, so we are very grateful to anyone who can fill it in.

Let us know what you think!
