Neighbourhood Nature

What is Neighbourhood Nature?

Neighbourhood Nature is about helping people across Gloucestershire take the lead in shaping their places for wildlife, community, and climate.

The wider project is funded by the Wates Family Enterprise Trust, with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust acting as the local delivery partner. This support allows GWT to work directly with communities, helping local people build confidence, develop their own ideas, and take practical action for the places they care about.

Building on the success of Nextdoor Nature and the community organising approach, Neighbourhood Nature supports local people to connect with each other, take meaningful action for nature, and have a say in how their neighbourhood changes over time. Whether it’s creating new green spaces, protecting existing ones, improving local wildlife habitats, or influencing planning decisions, Neighbourhood Nature is about putting power back into the hands of communities.

We're here to:

  • Support communities to reclaim and restore green space
  • Empower local people to lead nature-based and climate-friendly projects
  • Help residents understand and influence local planning and development
  • Build confidence, leadership, and connection between neighbours
  • Create a movement of people who care and act for the places they love

Our goal is to reach a tipping point: where 1 in 4 people feel inspired and supported to make change in their community. That’s when things really start to shift — for nature, for climate, and for all of us.

What’s Happening in Your Area?

We’re starting local conversations across Gloucestershire, helping communities explore key issues like:

  • Housing pressures and local character
  • Road schemes and infrastructure change
  • Nature’s recovery and green space protection
  • River health and water pollution
  • Local schools and young people’s visions for the future
