Hobbs Quarry

Once a hive of industrial activity, Hobbs Quarry nature reserve is now a wonderful place to view unique geology and experience the fossilised remains of past animals and plants which exist alongside a rich array of current wildlife species. This lush habitat is great for dormice and birds such as the black cap, treecreeper, nuthatch, buzzard and long-tailed tit.

Once a hive of industrial activity, Hobbs Quarry nature reserve is now a wonderful place to view the unique geology of the Silurian Wenlock Limestone and sinuous drapes of overlying bedded limestone. The fossilised remains of past species exist alongside the rich array of wildlife which includes ancient woodland species such as the small-leaved lime, pendunculate oak, herb Paris and greater butterfly orchid. This lush habitat is great for dormice and birds such as the black cap, treecreeper, nuthatch, buzzard and long-tailed tit. This site is an SSSI.

The main path down the side of the reserve to the lime kiln has a level gradient, beyond this the path is narrow with tree roots and uneven ground. The quarry has loose material that may fall, particularly during cold periods.
