Gift Aid FAQ

Gift Aid FAQs

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about Gift Aid, so you can better understand how it works and what it means for you.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a scheme available to charities where we can claim extra money from HMRC, an extra 25p for every £1 you donate to be precise. It will not cost you anything extra, but you must pay the basic UK income tax.

How does it work?

We ask on our donation forms whether you want to Gift Aid that donation. If you say yes you have to make a declaration to say you pay the minimum UK tax rate, which needs to be at least equal to the value of Gift Aid we will claim on your donation/s. You then have to provide some basic details such as your address and full name.

The declaration reads: Please treat all donations made to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust today, in the past 4 years, and in the future as Gift Aid donations. I am a UK taxpayer and understand that if I pay less Income Tax and / or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year it is my responsibility to pay any difference.

How can I make a Gift Aid declaration?

You can make a declaration here or when you make a donation or become a member.

How do I know if I have declared Gift Aid with you?

As this is sensitive information, you must email us at membership@gloucestershirewildlifetrust or call 01452 383333 to find out if we currently hold a Gift Aid declaration for you.

I think my circumstances have changed since I made a declaration, what should I do?

If you stop paying UK tax, it is your responsibility to tell us so we can end your Gift Aid declaration. This often happens once you retire or have a change in circumstances.

Additionally, if you start paying tax, you can then make a declaration, even if you had one before that ended, so we can start claiming Gift Aid on your donations again.

Can I Gift Aid my donations if I am retired/receiving a pension?

You may be paying income tax on your pension, if so your donations will qualify for Gift Aid as long as they’re not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6 April to 5 April).Â
