Elliott (Swift's Hill)

Swift's Hill is a local landmark with its distinctive double 'bump' situated in the beautiful Slad Valley, immortalised in Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie. The limestone grassland supports over 130 species of wildflowers including 13 species of orchid including the rare frog, bee and early purple orchids.

29 species of butterfly have been noted and kestrel, skylark, green woodpeckers, field vole, limestone snails and the rugged oil beetle and rare rufous grasshopper all live in and visit the site. Flowers such as knapweed and wild thyme support butterflies like the marbled white and common blue. Ancient woodland wildflowers such as violet, bluebell and sanicle line the shady track while stunning vipers bugloss is found near the quarry.

There are also great views from the top, on a clear day you can see as far as Wales.

This nature reserve is next to the new Laurie Lee Wood nature reserve opened in June 2013 and links to Snows Farm and Frith Wood nature reserves on the Slad Valley Wildlife Way.
